This is the community meeting point for the Sandy Bay–Taroona Parish. It is more than a static website. It is an online place for parishioners to meet, talk, share and dream about the possibilities for this parish. If you’re a member of the community you can register. This will give you the ability to contribute through blogs, forums, messages and adding calendar events.
If you’re not a member of the community you can view the content but cannot contribute. If nothing else happened, our bodies – our star dust body – would share the fate of the Universe. Our bodies will collapse at the end of our earthly lives into inert dust.
Ash Wednesday reminds us of the possibility of this fate. When I put the ashes on a person’s forehead on Ash Wednesday I say: “Remember that thou art dust and unto dust thou shall return”, and I will mark those ashes in the sign of the cross.
But you will recall that three days after the cross, Jesus had the victory over death. His body was transfigured by divine energy, like a new sun-burst, a new star-burst, a new creation we call ‘The Resurrection’. This is our destiny too, to share in that Resurrection.
So, let us embark on this 40 days of Lent, engaging in the three traditional practices of prayer, almsgiving and fasting. Let us especially contribute to Project Compassion, for we share the same beginning and destiny as every other human being: to be the most beautiful star-dust ever created by God, destined to share divine glory.
I also take this opportunity to welcome all those students who are taking up their studies at the University which is within the Parish. Together with several staff members, there is quite a University presence at our Masses during term.
I especially welcome those who have come from overseas. Please make sure you introduce yourself to me after Mass. I teach in the Faculty of Law so I understand some of the challenges you are all facing. Don’t hesitate to contact me at any time on 0418 397 602, or mtate@bigpond.com.
